Chhindwara/Chennai, Oct 9: The owner of Sresan Pharma, Ranganathan, has been arrested in Chennai by a special police team from Madhya Pradesh in connection with the recent cough syrup tragedy in Chhindwara district that claimed the lives of at least 20 children.
According to officials, the arrest followed coordinated operations conducted in Chennai and Kanchipuram. Ranganathan will be taken to the company’s factory in Kanchipuram for detailed interrogation and forensic inspection of the manufacturing facilities.
Authorities have alleged that Sresan Pharma produced Coldrif cough syrup, which was found to contain toxic chemicals responsible for causing severe kidney damage among children. Preliminary laboratory tests confirmed that the contaminated formulation triggered acute renal failure shortly after consumption.
Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla, speaking to the media in Chhindwara on Wednesday, assured that the government is taking “all necessary measures” to deliver justice to the victims and their families.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage across Madhya Pradesh, with three additional deaths reported within the past 24 hours due to similar renal complications. In response, the Chhindwara district administration has sealed five medical outlets and dispatched multiple samples of the syrup for advanced laboratory testing. Public awareness campaigns are also underway, urging parents to refrain from administering any cough syrups to children until official clearance is issued.
Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has raised concerns over the alleged wrongful targeting of doctors linked to the case. Several private practitioners, including Dr. Praveen Soni, are currently under investigation for reportedly prescribing or administering the toxic formulation.
The probe continues as health and law enforcement agencies work jointly to trace the supply chain, identify lapses in quality control, and ensure accountability for the tragedy that has shaken public confidence in drug safety standards.
