Lhasa/Beijing, October 23: A magnitude-7 earthquake hit China's Tibet region on Thursday evening, killing at least 16 people, injuring 32 and collapsing hundreds of homes in the northern regional city of Nagqu, official media said.

The quake struck at 10:33 pm local time (1433 GMT). Both the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported a magnitude of 7.0, with the epicentre located in Baqên County within Nagqu, near the border with Qinghai Province.

Search-and-rescue efforts continued as at least 339 homes collapsed, the Nagqu media office said, citing city government officials. Xinhua cited the China Earthquake Networks Center as putting the depth at 10 kilometres, while USGS recorded a depth of 18 km.

Nagqu lies more than 300 kilometres north of Tibet's capital, Lhasa. The region, along with southwestern China, Nepal and northern India, is seismically active due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates.
