Union Budget 2026 Eyes Boost to Northeast Buddhist Tourism, Aims for Global Visitor Growth

New Delhi, 01 Feb : In the Union Budget 2026, the Indian government announced plans to strengthen the Buddhist tourism circuit across several northeastern states as part of a broader strategy to attract more foreign visitors and highlight India’s spiritual heritage. The initiative aims to enhance tourist experiences at key Buddhist destinations in Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, and Tripura.

Under the new budget measures, authorities will focus on restoring and upgrading temples and monasteries, making them more attractive to both pilgrims and leisure travellers. The plan also includes improving supporting infrastructure such as access roads, visitor facilities, and amenities, helping position these sites as globally competitive tourism destinations.

Officials believe that by upgrading these heritage centres and linking them with wider tourism circuits, the region will not only preserve its rich cultural legacy but also draw a higher number of international tourists. This is expected to boost local economies and create new employment opportunities.
