WB News : Former IAS Officer Subrata Gupta Named Adviser to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
Kolkata, May 9 : In one of the first key administrative appointments made after the formation of West Bengal’s new BJP-led government, retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta has been appointed adviser to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. The appointment was announced through an official government notification shortly after the swearing-in ceremony of the new administration in Kolkata.
Gupta, a 1990-batch IAS officer, recently served as the Election Commission’s Special Roll Observer during the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls conducted ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. His new assignment places him among the top bureaucratic aides expected to assist the Chief Minister on governance and policy matters.
The state government also appointed IAS officer Shantanu Bala as the Chief Minister’s Private Secretary. Bala, a 2017-batch officer of the West Bengal cadre, had been serving as Additional District Magistrate of South 24 Parganas before taking up the new role. According to official notifications, both appointments came into effect immediately.
The appointments coincided with a major political transition in the state, as the Bharatiya Janata Party formed its first-ever government in West Bengal after securing a decisive mandate in the Assembly elections. Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the state’s ninth Chief Minister at a high-profile ceremony held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior BJP leaders.
Political observers view Gupta’s appointment as significant due to his long administrative experience and involvement in election-related responsibilities in recent months. His advisory role is expected to focus on governance strategy, administrative coordination and policy implementation as the new government begins its tenure.
The BJP’s victory marked the end of the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state and represented a major political breakthrough for the party in eastern India.
