West Bengal Nurse Dies of Cardiac Arrest Weeks After Recovering from Nipah Virus
Kolkata, 13 Feb : A 25-year-old nurse in West Bengal’s Barasat in North 24 Parganas district has died of cardiac arrest weeks after she had tested negative for Nipah virus infection, health officials confirmed.
The healthcare worker — one of two nurses who contracted the virus in early January after returning from her hometown — had been on ventilator support for several weeks and remained in a prolonged coma, which severely weakened her immunity.
Although she showed signs of recovery and was weaned off ventilation at the end of January, she developed multiple complications, including a lung infection and hospital-acquired infections. These secondary health issues led to her sudden cardiac arrest and death at a private hospital on Thursday afternoon, state health officials said.
Authorities noted that her death was not directly caused by the Nipah infection, and all contact tracing and surveillance efforts have so far shown no new active cases in the state.
