West Bengal Tightens Liquor Shop Rules: 500-Metre Restriction in Urban Areas, 1 KM Elsewhere
Kolkata, October 1: The West Bengal Government has tightened licensing regulations for new liquor shops, increasing the mandatory distance from schools, colleges and religious institutions.
Under the revised rules, new liquor outlets must maintain a minimum distance of 500 metres in Kolkata and other municipal areas, while a stricter 1-km restriction will apply in rural and non-municipal regions. The previous minimum distance was approximately 300 metres.
The revised norms apply only to new licences, leaving existing liquor establishments unaffected. Over 4,000 liquor outlets, off-shops and bars currently operate within 1 km of such institutions across Bengal.
The notification also introduces provisions under Section 4P of the Excise Act for establishing new off-shops through bars.
