Yangang Police Seize Commercial Quantity Of Codeine Syrup From Siliguri-Bound Taxi Passenger, One Arrested
Namchi, July 4: In a significant strike in the ongoing war against drugs, Yangang Police in Namchi District have arrested one person and seized a commercial quantity of codeine-based cough syrup after intercepting a service taxi travelling from Siliguri to Yangang, police said.
According to police, the operation was launched after credible source information was received by PI Rajeev Mukhia, Station House Officer of Yangang Police Station, regarding an individual suspected to be in possession of controlled substances and travelling on a service taxi from Siliguri to Yangang.
Acting swiftly on the input, a police team led by DySP Roshan Rai, SDPO Rabong Sub Division, along with personnel from Yangang Police Station, intercepted the vehicle at Lower Sripatam near the Primary Health Sub Centre (PHSC).
A search of the vehicle was conducted in accordance with legal procedures, in the presence of the SDM of Yangang Sub Division and independent witnesses, police stated. The search allegedly led to the recovery and seizure of a commercial quantity of codeine cough syrup, a controlled substance frequently trafficked for abuse.
The accused has been identified by police as Ramesh Limboo, 41, a resident of Upper Sripatam, Yangang, Namchi District. He has been taken into custody.
A case under the relevant provisions of the Sikkim Anti Drugs Act (SADA) has been registered at Yangang Police Station, and further investigation is in progress, police said.
The seizure adds to a series of anti-drug operations conducted by Sikkim Police across districts in recent months, with the Siliguri corridor remaining a key route under watch for the movement of controlled substances into the state.
