Siliguri : A suspected attempt to smuggle a large quantity of ganja by train was foiled by railway police at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station. Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of the Siliguri GRP Special Operations Group (SOG) and NJP GRP, including personnel in plain clothes, conducted an operation and recovered around 10.240 kg of ganja.
One person has been arrested in connection with the case. The accused has been identified as Tuntun Sahani, a resident of Vaishali district in Bihar.
According to police sources, the Siliguri GRP SOG received information that a large consignment of ganja was being transported by train. Following the input, GRP personnel launched surveillance at Platform No. 6 of NJP Railway Station.
When the Rani Kamalapati Down Express arrived at the station, police conducted a search of the train’s AC coach. During the operation, a passenger was detained after his movements appeared suspicious. His responses during preliminary questioning reportedly raised suspicion, following which police searched the two backpacks he was carrying.
The search led to the recovery of nine packets of ganja, weighing approximately 10.240 kg in total. Tuntun Sahani was subsequently arrested.
During preliminary interrogation, police reportedly learned that the accused was allegedly carrying the contraband from Tripura to Bihar.
The accused was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Tuesday, where police sought his custody for further investigation. The GRP has launched a detailed probe to determine whether other individuals are involved in the alleged smuggling network.
