“Better a Divorced Daughter Than a Dead One”: SG Tushar Mehta’s Sharp Remark During Twisha Sharma Case Hearing

New Delhi, May 25 : The death of 33-year-old Twisha Sharma has sparked widespread outrage, with the case now attracting significant attention both inside and outside the courtroom. During a hearing about the investigation, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta made a striking comment that quickly gained public notice: “It is better to have a divorced daughter than a dead one.”

Twisha Sharma, a former model and marketing professional from Noida, was found dead at her in-laws’ home in Bhopal just months after marrying advocate Samarth Singh. Her family has accused the in-laws of dowry harassment and mental abuse, claiming attempts to influence the investigation due to the family’s legal connections.

The case has turned into a major legal and political issue. Samarth Singh was later taken into custody after dramatic developments in court. The Madhya Pradesh government has recommended a CBI investigation into the case.

Twisha’s family continues to demand justice, raising concerns about CCTV footage, forensic handling, and possible mistakes in the investigation. Her mother-in-law, retired judge Giribala Singh, has also gone to court alleging inconsistencies in how evidence and digital records were collected.

The case has reignited discussions about toxic marriages, dowry-related abuse, and the social stigma around divorce. Mehta’s comment in court has resonated widely online, with many people calling it a powerful reminder that social pressure should never force women to stay in abusive relationships.
