Centre May Rebrand MNREGA as ‘Pujya Bapu Gramin Rojgar Yojana’

New Delhi, Dec 12 : The Central government is reportedly considering a major change to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA), one of India’s largest rural welfare schemes. As per early inputs, the programme may soon be renamed “Pujya Bapu Gramin Rojgar Yojana” as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known as Bapu.

Government sources on Friday, December 12, revealed that the Union Cabinet is likely to discuss and possibly approve a proposal to rename the existing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act, 2005 (MGNREGA) as the “Pujya Bapu Rural Employment Guarantee Bill 2025.”

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is scheduled to meet today to deliberate on several key policy matters, including this renaming proposal.
