China Unveils Powerful Microwave Weapon That Could Disrupt Starlink Satellites
China has revealed a major advancement in directed-energy military technology that could potentially target satellite networks such as SpaceX’s Starlink, which provides global broadband connectivity. Scientists from the Northwest Institute of Nuclear Technology in Xi’an have developed a compact high-power microwave weapon system named TPG1000Cs, marking a significant step forward in anti-satellite warfare capabilities.
Unlike earlier microwave weapons that were bulky and operated only for short durations, the new system is approximately four metres long and weighs around five tonnes. Its compact design makes it suitable for deployment on land-based vehicles, naval platforms, aircraft, and possibly even space-based systems. During testing, the weapon reportedly generated microwave bursts reaching up to 20 gigawatts for nearly one minute, far surpassing the sustained output levels of previous systems.
High-power microwave weapons function by emitting intense electromagnetic radiation capable of disrupting or damaging electronic components within satellite systems. Unlike conventional kinetic anti-satellite weapons, this technology does not physically destroy satellites, thereby avoiding the creation of hazardous space debris. Such systems could theoretically disable communication and navigation satellite constellations without long-term orbital consequences.
Experts say this development highlights China’s increasing focus on space warfare technologies and reflects its strategic efforts to counter the growing reliance on large satellite networks. As modern militaries and civilian infrastructures become more dependent on space-based communication, navigation, and intelligence systems, directed-energy weapons are emerging as a critical element of future defense strategies.
