Starlink Offers Free Internet Support After Nepal Flash Floods

Kathmandu, Aug 30: Starlink has offered to deploy satellite internet kits and provide free connectivity to Nepal’s government and humanitarian agencies as emergency operations continue following the catastrophic flash floods along the Nepal-Tibet border.

Expressing solidarity with communities affected by the disaster, Starlink said its services could help restore critical communications in areas where roads, bridges and conventional mobile networks have been damaged or disrupted.

“Our hearts are with the people of Nepal and the Tibet border region after this week’s catastrophic floods,” the company said.

According to Starlink, satellite connectivity could assist rescue teams coordinating search operations, medical personnel responding to injured people and families attempting to contact relatives who remain missing or unreachable.

The company said its satellite internet kits can establish high-speed, low-latency connectivity within minutes, provided they have access to a power source and an unobstructed view of the sky.

Unlike conventional terrestrial internet infrastructure, satellite-based systems can be particularly useful during disasters when mobile towers, fibre-optic networks and other communication infrastructure have been damaged.

Starlink said it is prepared to begin deploying the equipment and providing free internet service once it receives the necessary permission from Nepalese authorities.

The offer comes as rescue, relief and recovery operations continue in flood-affected areas, where disruption to roads and communications has complicated efforts to reach isolated communities.
