CM Announces Revival of Historic EFR, Over 1,000 Gorkha Youths to Get Recruitment Opportunity

Kurseong, June 16: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced the revival of the historic Eastern Frontier Rifles (EFR), paving the way for the recruitment of more than 1,000 Gorkha youths into the force.

Addressing a public gathering in Kurseong during his first visit to the Darjeeling Hills as Chief Minister, Adhikari paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of Gorkha soldiers and assured that the state government would restore the legacy of the EFR.

He alleged that recruitment to the force had remained stalled under the previous administration and claimed that the once-prominent EFR had been reduced to just two battalions. The Chief Minister said his government is committed to strengthening the force once again.

Adhikari also outlined a broader development vision for North Bengal, highlighting tourism promotion, improved road connectivity, disaster management, skill development, women's empowerment, and youth-centric initiatives as key priorities. He assured that central welfare schemes would reach people in the Hills and said his administration intends to focus on long-term development.
