Gangtok, 23 Jan : In a decisive move to tackle persistent traffic congestion, the Gangtok Traffic Police have launched a crackdown on unauthorized long-term parking at the bustling Lal Bazaar Parking Plaza.
Acting on a series of public grievances regarding the lack of space, a specialized team led by ASP Karma Chedup Bhutia (Tango-1) inspected the facility located beneath the Kanchendzonga Shopping Complex today.
The Problem: Abandoned Vehicles and Sanitation
During the inspection, authorities uncovered the primary source of the congestion: numerous vehicles, including several off-road and non-functional cars, had been stationed in the plaza for months.
The long-term occupation of these spots has made it nearly impossible for daily shoppers to find parking, even for brief errands. Furthermore, the prolonged presence of these stationary vehicles has prevented proper cleaning, leading to a significant deterioration in the area’s hygiene.
The Verdict: Move It or Face Penalties
To restore order, the Traffic Police made immediate announcements on-site and issued a strict one-week ultimatum to vehicle owners.
Key directives issued by the police include:
Immediate Removal: Owners must remove vehicles parked for extended periods.
Night Parking Only: To ensure space is available for the public during the day, long-term parking will now be restricted to night hours only.
Private Arrangements: Owners are advised to shift their vehicles to private parking spaces or designated zones.
Failure to comply with these directions within the one-week window will result in strict penalties.
