Desperate to Get Into Medical College, UP Aspirant Self-Inflicts Injury for Disability Quota
A young aspirant from Uttar Pradesh’s Jaunpur district allegedly went to extreme lengths to try and secure a medical college seat under the disability quota after failing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) twice. Police say the man intentionally amputated part of his own foot and falsely claimed it was the result of an attack.
The incident unfolded in Khalilpur village when the aspirant’s elder brother reported that “unknown assailants” had assaulted him the previous night, leaving him unconscious with a severed foot. Based on this account, authorities registered a case and initiated an investigation.
However, inconsistencies in his narrative and a review of mobile phone data soon raised doubts among investigators. A personal diary recovered during the probe contained a note expressing his determination to become a doctor by 2026. Police also questioned a woman whose contact was linked to the case, further deepening suspicions.
Officials believe that the aspirant devised the plan due to mounting pressure and stress after failing NEET on two occasions. Instead of being assaulted, evidence suggests he may have inflicted the injury on himself to qualify for admission via the disability quota. Police are now exploring appropriate legal action for providing false information and misleading the investigation.
The young man is currently being treated at a private hospital and, once stabilized, will be questioned further by law enforcement.
