Fresh Surge of COVID-19 Cases in South and Western India Prompts Health Advisory
India is witnessing a renewed uptick in COVID-19 cases, particularly in the southern and western regions, prompting health authorities to issue precautionary advisories. The latest data reveals Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Maharashtra as the states recording the highest number of active cases, while emerging variants add a new dimension to monitoring efforts.
As of May 25, the nation has registered 257 active COVID-19 infections, most of which are mild and manageable without hospitalisation. Kerala leads with 95 cases, followed by Tamil Nadu (66) and Maharashtra (56). Other states such as Karnataka (13), Puducherry (10), Gujarat (7), and Delhi (5) also reported smaller clusters of cases.
According to Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Senior Consultant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, the situation remains largely under control. “There’s no need for panic. Most infections resemble seasonal flu and do not require hospitalisation,” he reassured during an interaction with ANI.
Despite the generally mild nature of current cases, two recent fatalities have raised concern. A 21-year-old diabetic patient in Thane, Maharashtra, and an 84-year-old comorbid individual in Karnataka succumbed to COVID-related complications.
Health authorities are also closely tracking two newly detected variants — NB.1.8.1 (identified in Gujarat) and LF.7 (found in Tamil Nadu). While these have not been classified as variants of concern, both the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are maintaining surveillance.
In light of these developments, the Union Health Ministry has issued a new advisory, encouraging citizens to adopt the following measures:
* Wear masks in crowded spaces
* Maintain regular hand hygiene
* Avoid travel when feeling unwell
Officials stress that these guidelines are preventive in nature and aimed at curbing any potential escalation of infections. With continued public cooperation and monitoring, authorities remain confident that the situation will remain manageable.
