Gangtok Murder Case: Court Awards Life Sentence to Accused After Detailed Probe

Gangtok, April 29: The District and Sessions Court (Special Division–I) in Gangtok has sentenced Dewashish Haldar to life imprisonment in a murder case that evolved from an initially reported unnatural death into a full-fledged criminal investigation.

The verdict was delivered in open court on April 29. Along with the life term, the court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on the convict. In case of non-payment, he will have to serve an additional two months of rigorous imprisonment.

The case relates to the death of Suresh Gurung, whose body was found on March 16, 2024, at Haat Ghar in Shanti Complex, Ranipool. At first, the incident was treated as an unnatural death and registered at Ranipool Police Station. However, subsequent findings during the investigation led authorities to reclassify it as a murder case under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

A postmortem conducted at STNM Hospital revealed severe injuries, including multiple lacerations and fractures on the victim’s face and head. Medical evidence confirmed that the death was not accidental, pointing clearly to homicide.

Investigators later identified Dewashish Haldar as the prime suspect. According to police findings, he had been seen near the location around the time of the incident. A formal case was registered against him on March 20, 2024.

The probe involved a detailed reconstruction of events, tracking movements, and gathering both physical and circumstantial evidence. The prosecution presented a consistent and well-supported argument in court, establishing a clear chain of evidence.

After reviewing all submissions and evidence, the court found Haldar guilty of murder and handed down the sentence, underscoring the seriousness of the crime and bringing the case to a close.
