Goat Fight Leads to Historic Life Sentences for 12 Relatives in Rajasthan
Kota, April 3 : A petty argument over a goat has permanently shattered two families in Rajasthan. Delivering a landmark verdict this week, a local court in Kota handed life sentences to twelve people for a murder that took place nearly eight years ago.
Additional Sessions Judge Shweta Sharma presided over the case, ordering the dozen relatives to spend the rest of their lives behind bars while also hitting each of them with a Rs 13,000 fine. The massive joint sentencing is a first for the Kota district, breaking local records for the number of people given life terms at the exact same time.
It all started back on August 31, 2018, in the Mumbai Yojna Colony. The complainant, Zahid Hussain, explained to authorities that his uncle was wrapped up in a bitter neighborhood feud with a man named Ramzani. The entire dispute was simply over a goat.
Hoping to play peacemaker, Zahid’s brother Istyak Hussain grabbed two friends and went over to Ramzani’s place to talk things out and settle the disagreement. But the peace talks never happened. When Istyak and his buddies stepped out to a nearby shop to buy some tobacco, Ramzani’s crew pounced. Armed with knives, heavy sticks, and sharp weapons, the family ambushed the men. Istyak suffered catastrophic injuries during the beating and eventually lost his life at a local private hospital.
Police slowly rounded up the suspects over the following months. The massive list of convicts features members of the same household and extended family, including Ramzani, his wife Farzana, their sons Mushtaq and Mukhtar, and eight other close relatives. After a grinding trial that stretched over several years, the court finally delivered its crushing blow to the family this Thursday, ensuring they face the ultimate legal price for a senseless act of violence.
