Historic Moment in Indian Judiciary: Mamata Banerjee Becomes First Sitting CM to Speak in Supreme Court

New Delhi, 4 Feb : In a landmark development, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has made history by personally appearing before the Supreme Court of India to present her case, marking the first-ever instance of a serving state chief executive doing so.

The chief minister reached the apex court in New Delhi on Wednesday as part of her challenge against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls being conducted in West Bengal ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections. She filed an application to appear as a party in person, which was accepted, allowing her to address the bench directly.

Banerjee, who holds a law degree from Jogesh Chandra Choudhury College of Law, Calcutta, has not been actively practising law for many years. Despite this, she chose to step into the courtroom to argue that the SIR process has caused undue hardship for voters and could wrongly exclude genuine electors from the voter list.

During the hearing, the bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, examined her plea. Security arrangements around the Supreme Court premises were tightened due to increased public and media attention surrounding the historic appearance.

In her petition, Banerjee has sought directions for the Election Commission of India to halt certain aspects of the SIR process, use the existing 2025 voter list for the 2026 assembly elections, and ensure that minor discrepancies in names do not lead to the exclusion of legitimate voters.

Legal experts have observed that while political leaders often approach courts through legal counsel, it is unprecedented for a sitting chief minister to personally argue a case before the Supreme Court, highlighting the exceptional nature of the event.
