Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife Approaches Supreme Court Against His Detention

New Delhi, Sep 3 : Gitanjali J. Angmo, wife of renowned Ladakh activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging his detention under the National Security Act (NSA). The writ petition, submitted under Article 32 of the Constitution, was moved a week after Wangchuk’s arrest on September 26 during the protests demanding statehood for Ladakh.

According to the plea, Wangchuk has been shifted to Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan. Angmo has sought his immediate release through a habeas corpus petition, raising concerns over his health and the lack of clarity on the grounds for detention. “It has been a week since his arrest, yet I have no information about his condition or the reasons for his detention,” she said in a social media statement.

The matter is likely to be mentioned for urgent hearing when the Supreme Court resumes after the Dussehra break on October 6.

Wangchuk, a Ramon Magsaysay award recipient and noted innovator, has been at the forefront of environmental and social campaigns in Ladakh. His detention has sparked widespread concern among civil society groups.
