SUSA Flags Alleged Irregularities at Siliguri Paramedical Institute, Seeks Probe to Protect Students’ Futures
Gangtok, 9 Feb : The Sikkim University Students’ Association (SUSA) has raised alarm over alleged academic misrepresentation involving students enrolled in Paramedical and Nursing courses at Asha Paramedical and Nursing Institute in Siliguri. Expressing grave concern, the association said the issue has placed the careers and qualifications of several students in jeopardy.
In a statement released on Sunday, SUSA claimed that students were reportedly given misleading assurances about the legitimacy and recognition of the courses offered by the institute. Trusting these claims, students are said to have invested substantial time, effort, and money, only to later discover that the validity of their qualifications could be questionable.
According to the association, preliminary information suggests that the institute may have been operating without proper authorisation and lacked basic academic requirements such as functional laboratories, essential equipment, and adequate clinical training facilities. These shortcomings, SUSA warned, cast serious doubts on the credibility of the certificates issued.
SUSA highlighted that under the National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions (NCAHP) Act, 2021, the NCAHP serves as the apex body responsible for regulating standards and approving allied and healthcare institutions in India. Institutions functioning without its recognition, the association noted, not only violate statutory norms but also risk derailing students’ professional futures.
Calling for immediate action, SUSA urged the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the NCAHP to conduct a thorough investigation into the institute’s operations and take stringent measures if any irregularities or fraudulent practices are confirmed. The association also advocated for a transparent, publicly available list of approved institutions to help students make informed choices.
Additionally, SUSA appealed to the Governments of Sikkim and West Bengal to step in and coordinate with relevant authorities to ensure accountability, safeguard students’ rights, and facilitate necessary relief and remedial measures for those affected.
Reiterating its commitment to student welfare, the Sikkim University Students’ Association affirmed that it stands firmly with the affected students and will continue to pursue the matter until accountability is fixed and justice is delivered.
