Viral Rumor About New Union Territory From Bihar-Bengal Districts Declared False
New Delhi, March 8: The central government has rejected claims circulating on social media about creating a new Union Territory that would combine districts from Bihar and West Bengal. Authorities clarified that these reports are misleading, and no proposal is being considered.
This clarification followed several online posts that suggested the government was planning to set up a Union Territory near the important Siliguri Corridor by merging selected districts from both states. The posts quickly spread across social media, sparking discussions and speculation among users.
According to the viral claims, districts like Purnea, Araria, Kishanganj, and Katihar in Bihar, along with Malda and Uttar Dinajpur in West Bengal, were said to be under consideration for the proposed territory. However, officials confirmed that there is no basis for these claims.
The Press Information Bureau’s Fact Check unit addressed the issue and stated that the circulating posts are false. It clarified that the Government of India has neither discussed nor proposed any plan to create a new Union Territory by combining districts from Bihar and West Bengal.
Authorities also advised the public to verify information through credible sources before sharing it online, emphasizing that misinformation can spread quickly and cause unnecessary confusion.
This incident highlights the growing problem of fake news on social media and the need to verify sensitive political or administrative claims before forwarding them.
