Siliguri : In a major crackdown on drug trafficking at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station, railway police seized approximately 100 grams of brown sugar and arrested a 31-year-old woman from Assam. The estimated value of the seized contraband is believed to be worth several lakhs of rupees.
According to police sources, on Saturday, acting on a tip-off about drug trafficking, a joint team comprising the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Siliguri GRP and plainclothes personnel of NJP GRP launched an operation. The operation was led by Pasang Sherpa, IC of NJP GRP.
During the operation, the Down Vivek Express, arriving from Assam, reached Platform No. 6 of NJP Railway Station. Police personnel questioned a woman travelling in the train's B5 AC coach after finding her movements suspicious. When inconsistencies emerged in her statements, she was detained and searched.
During the search, police recovered six soap boxes from the woman's school bag, in which approximately 100 grams of brown sugar had allegedly been concealed. The arrested woman was identified as Rehana Khatun (31), a resident of Nagaon district in Assam.
Police have registered a case against the accused under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. She was produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Sunday, where police sought her remand for further investigation.
According to GRP sources, the preliminary investigation suggests that the seized narcotics were being transported from Assam to South India. Police are now working to identify other individuals involved in the trafficking network and establish the full chain of connections behind the alleged smuggling operation.
