Two Bihar Youths Arrested at NJP Station Before Alleged Firearm Smuggling
In a joint operation at New Jalpaiguri (NJP) Railway Station, police arrested two youths from Bihar for allegedly attempting to smuggle firearms by train. The weapons were recovered from their school bags before the alleged handover could take place.
The arrested individuals have been identified as Rohan Kumar (20) and Guddu Kumar (19), both residents of the Khagaria district of Bihar.
According to NJP GRP sources, acting on a tip-off on Sunday night, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Siliguri GRP and plainclothes personnel of NJP GRP launched a joint operation at the station. When the Down Vivek Express arrived at Platform No. 6, the police searched its general compartment and detained the two youths on suspicion.
A search of their school bags led to the recovery of firearms, following which both were arrested.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the duo had travelled from Alipurduar to NJP by train. They allegedly planned to board the Vivek Express to Kishanganj and then travel back to Khagaria in Bihar with the firearms. Police suspect that the weapons were being transported for sale.
The accused were produced before the Jalpaiguri court on Monday. The GRP has sought their custody for further interrogation to determine whether a larger arms-smuggling network is involved in the case.
Police have launched a detailed investigation to identify other individuals who may be connected to the alleged arms-smuggling operation.
