Attempt to Smuggle Liquor to Bihar by Train Foiled; Two Arrested at Siliguri Junction

Siliguri: An attempt to allegedly smuggle liquor to Bihar by train was foiled by plainclothes personnel of the Junction GRP on Monday night.

Two persons were arrested from Platform No. 3 of Siliguri Junction railway station, and 60 bottles of beer were recovered from their possession.

The arrested persons have been identified as Vishal Kumar (26), a resident of Jorabganj in Katihar, Bihar, and Gautam Roy (42), a resident of Fatapukur in Rajganj.

According to police sources, acting on a tip-off, plainclothes GRP personnel conducted a search operation at Platform No. 3 on Monday night. During the operation, the two men were allegedly found moving around suspiciously on the platform.

The duo was detained and searched. Police reportedly recovered a total of 60 bottles of beer from school bags and trolley bags they were carrying.

During preliminary questioning, police allegedly learned that the liquor was being transported by train with the intention of illegally taking it to Bihar. The two were subsequently arrested by the GRP and taken to the GRP office for further questioning.

The accused were produced before the Siliguri court on Tuesday.

The GRP has launched an investigation to determine whether others were involved in the alleged smuggling operation, where the liquor had been procured from, and to whom it was allegedly intended to be delivered in Bihar.
