Deadly Thunderstorms Ravage Uttar Pradesh, Leaving Dozens Dead Across Multiple Districts
Fierce winds, lightning strikes and heavy rain trigger widespread destruction as authorities launch relief operations
Prayagraj (UP), May 14: A powerful spell of thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall swept across several parts of Uttar Pradesh, killing at least 89 people and causing extensive damage to homes, infrastructure and farmland, according to state officials.
The severe weather struck multiple districts on Wednesday, uprooting trees, collapsing walls and disrupting power supply in many areas. Officials said most fatalities were linked to lightning strikes, falling debris and structural collapses during intense dust storms and rain.
Authorities identified some of the worst-affected districts as Prayagraj, Sant Ravidas Nagar, Fatehpur and Mirzapur, where a significant number of deaths were reported. Several other districts, including Bareilly, Unnao, Badaun and Pratapgarh, also witnessed widespread destruction as strong winds tore through residential areas and marketplaces.
State disaster management reports indicated that more than 50 people sustained injuries, while livestock losses and property damage were also reported from different parts of the state. Emergency teams were deployed to clear roads blocked by uprooted trees and restore essential services in affected regions.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath reviewed the situation and directed district administrations to accelerate relief and compensation efforts. Officials were instructed to ensure immediate assistance to affected families and maintain continuous monitoring of weather conditions.
The India Meteorological Department had earlier warned of unstable weather conditions across parts of northern India due to active western disturbances. Meteorologists said the combination of moisture, rising temperatures and strong wind systems contributed to the sudden and destructive storms.
Meanwhile, dramatic visuals from Bareilly showing a man being lifted into the air while holding onto a tin shed during the storm circulated widely on social media, highlighting the intensity of the winds. Reports later indicated that he survived the incident.
Weather authorities have warned that thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds may continue in several districts over the next 24 hours. Orange and yellow alerts have been issued in parts of the state, with residents advised to remain indoors during severe weather and avoid open fields or unstable structures.
Experts say pre-monsoon storms are common across northern India between March and June, but the scale of destruction caused by this weather system has raised concerns over disaster preparedness and public awareness regarding lightning and storm safety.
