Monsoon Turns Active Again: Nearly 70% of India Covered Under Thick Cloud Blanket
The southwest monsoon has regained momentum, with satellite images captured on July 19 showing that nearly 60–70% of India is covered under dense cloud cover. The widespread cloud formation indicates a significant revival of monsoon activity across the country.
The thickest cloud bands are visible over the northern plains, stretching from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh through Bihar to West Bengal, while extensive cloud cover also blankets the Northeastern states, signaling widespread rainfall in the region.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the active monsoon conditions are expected to persist throughout the week. The weather agency has forecast widespread rainfall across Northeast India, with heavy to very heavy rainfall likely in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura.
Several parts of northern and eastern India are also expected to receive moderate to heavy showers, bringing relief from recent dry spells but increasing the risk of waterlogging, localized flooding, and landslides in vulnerable areas. Authorities have advised residents in the affected regions to stay updated with official weather advisories and exercise caution during periods of intense rainfall.
