Satellite image reveals 5 weather systems driving widespread heavy rainfall across India
A satellite image has highlighted the presence of five active weather systems working simultaneously across India, creating favourable conditions for widespread rainfall over the next 4–5 days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
The most significant system is a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal, which is expected to move west-northwest across north Odisha and north Chhattisgarh during the next three days. The IMD said this system will continue to strengthen monsoon activity and bring heavy to very heavy rainfall across several parts of central and eastern India.
Apart from the low-pressure area, the remaining weather systems—including the monsoon trough, an upper-air cyclonic circulation, strong southwesterly monsoon winds, and moisture inflow from the Bay of Bengal—are working together to fuel widespread rain across the country.
States likely to experience heavy rainfall include Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, and parts of Northeast India. Some regions may also witness thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas.
The IMD has advised residents in affected regions to remain alert, avoid waterlogged areas, and follow official weather updates, as intense rainfall may disrupt transportation, trigger flash floods, and increase the risk of landslides in hilly areas.
